Trans-Biological Kinesis

In later chapters we will develop the concept of Trans-Biological Kinesis, but let's get a first whiff of it here. The combining form “trans” means through or beyond. Kinesis indicates the force to move. So Trans-Biological Kinesis as a concept moves us past the physical biological forces that hold us rooted to one static place. Biologically, though we are very refined animals, we are still animals. But biology isn't enough for us. We have a human component that is inconsistent with biology and often in conflict with it.

We are pulled by strong biological animal needs. We are pulled by strong human Trans-Biological needs. The struggle between these two forces hurts. It must hurt, because the Trans-Biological urge is so new. This might not be so in another thousand years. It's hard to remain superstitious about something like the moon when you see people walking on it. And yet the frightened primitive part of us is capable of shedding one superstition only to replace it with another. It makes no sense to shake off blind faith in religion only to spout blind faith in science.

Our ability to create meaning and values is such that we can expand it both by evolution and by revolution. The evolution in question is not a biological evolution that moves at a snail's pace based on natural selection; it is the combined effort of many human brains. We will always have a biological animal component; we are flesh and blood. But we have arrived at a point where our animal beings mean less to us than they did in the past. Since the two sides still fight, we need to arm ourselves with weapons that allow the good guys to win. That weapon is the subject of this book: Trans-Biological Kinesis. It allows us to claw out some space for the human in ourselves. The goal, the direction, is infinite human possibility. Infinite human possibility is real. And like freedom, technology, love and even history, infinite human possibility is new.

But the glimmering new that surrounds us may be just out of our reach. To get to it, we may first have to struggle to break down walls which, at first, we may not even see.
