Chapter Nine: ROOTS

In this chapter you'll learn:

  • How to recognize roots and traditions that can hold you back.

  • How to reconcile your roots with your need to move on in life.

  • How to look at your family background and its continuing traditions.

  • How to escape the “generation” you were born in.

  • The best ways to deal with religion, gender, social class and other distinctions between people.

If ye would go high, then use your own legs! Do not get yourselves carried aloft; do not seat yourselves on other people's backs and heads! (Friedrich Nietzsche, 1844-1900)

Human beings living in the world put down powerful roots. But we are not trees which find sustenance in the ground. We were born with legs and the desire to roam around and investigate the new. If we have roots, we can cut them, replant them, discard them entirely. When we do, we not only achieve full use of our legs, we can even grow wings!

One by one, in this section, we will examine common areas in which human beings find themselves rooted like trees. It's essential for you, for your own success and fulfillment in life, to uproot yourself from each of these strong forces that keep you tied to one spot, and then to walk off freely in your own power
