Chapter Ten: WORDS

In this chapter you'll learn:

  • Why some words and symbols are so powerful that you must use them with great care.

  • How to maximize your “inner” and “outer” vocabularies.

  • How to create intentional confusion in order to add meaning and impact to your communication.

  • How to direct your voice and use of language to get the most out of your dealings with other people.

  • How to create powerful “iconic fuel” out of everyday words and symbols.

Word, Symbols and Icon

Without knowing the force of words, it is impossible to know men. (Confucius, 551-479 B.C.)

We live shrouded in an atmosphere, we here on earth, with just a few miles of precious breathable air to support us. Without that thin sliver of oxygen that surrounds us, we literally cannot live. And yet, in a figurative but important sense, we also exist in a vast sea of symbols and words. Without our symbols and words, the human in us dies, and even the animal in us shrivels into a brute. No one truly knows where human language came from, but most thinkers agree that without it, civilization as we know it would be impossible. Words are the basic building blocks of our thinking. Icons and symbols, like words, allow us to communicate ideas and share meaning. The ability to add new meaning to words, either individually or in combination with each other, is the key to our uniquely human facility to make something out of nothing.

Words can excite our passions, free us from fear, threaten our independence, awaken our senses, make us go out and spend money. Certain words can win our allegiance and love, while others bring up deep reservoirs of frustration and rage. Dictators and tyrants rarely succeed in oppressing others without a mastery of words. By the same token, freedom is rarely if ever won without an even greater mastery of words. In a situation of political repression, isn't it enough that the regime has complete control over all the guns and tanks and planes? No. Tyrants, through censorship, need control over communication, over the spread of words, as well.

Five hundred years ago, Martin Luther turned his world upside down through the power of words. Thomas Jefferson, in the Declaration of Independence, did the same. And there probably have been no more incendiary words as those written by Thomas Paine. Great words are as infectious as viruses.

The use of “great” words is not restricted to earth-shaking events or turning points in history, however. We individual human beings have access to the raw material to use the power of words to enrich and maximize our everyday lives. And we all have individual turning points, where words can have quite a sensitive effect.

Consider words spoken to a child. You as a child may have been helped or hindered by a few choice words from an adult's mouth. You as an adult may have the opportunity to drop a few choice words within hearing of a child. Or consider any business situation, any career or community situation, any love or romance situation. The more verbal ammunition you have, the more powerful you can be. This doesn't mean that you must astound others with your vocabulary or vocal power. It merely indicates that you will have the ability to use language to the maximum to get the effect you wish. As an effective, kinetic human being, you will know what you are saying to a depth not shared by more limited people. You will assess the words of others clearly, use inner language to think clearly, express yourself clearly. All this depends on your personal sensitivity to word power. You can constantly gain in sensitivity through the use of strategic Shocks that motivate you to gain linguistic depth. Words as Shocks open up the heart and allow true Trans-Biological Kinesis.
